New Packaged Screening Facility for Hihi WWTP
April 3, 2025
The Hihi wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) treats wastewater from the town of Hihi, located in Far North District region.
A new packaged and modular inlet works to process 20 litres per second was supplied to the site to increase solids removal to protect the downstream process, which is based on an activated sludge process. The final treated effluent is disinfected and then pumped to a constructed wetland.

“Removing gross solids, plastics and other screenings from the wastewater stream allows the downstream process to operate effectively and efficiently. Solids accumulation in any activated sludge or pond process can lead to process upsets, compromising discharge consent limits.
Our modular inlet works solutions are perfect for New Zealand treatment plants in that we include distribution wells, bypass chambers with manual screening, structural works, controls and site commissioning works” says Joshua Eickhoff, of Hydroflux Epco NZ.
Hydroflux offers modular and packaged inlet works solutions sized from 5 through to 250 L/s. The screening technology is selected to suit the application and solids load and can include grit and FOG removal. Controls are design and manufactured locally in New Zealand with site support provided by the local Hydroflux NZ team.
